It is both the title of this book and the name of its principal character. The setting is the Mojave Desert. In the guise of an ancient tortoise, Tude contends the Mojave is the cradle of an ancient, ordered society -- a society much older, separate and apart from mans, governed by the laws of natural selection and adaptation.

Until recently, it had few threats. Now, man and his machines are destroying it. Tude knows man, having been his captive. He and a young protege, Uta (You-tah), begin a quest to answer the universal questions regarding mans role and responsibilities in the cosmos.

Their story begins south of Death Valley near the Amargosa River and ends at Lavic Dry Lake, east of Pisgah. Or, does it? That is the question each reader must answer.
