Juliet is considered to be a lucky girl. After all, she has many of the components of a perfect life : the big Georgian house in Norfolk and Two Crispy Ducks, a chic Chinese restaurant in London which she runs with her husband Michael. Their fiveMoreJuliet is considered to be a lucky girl. After all, she has many of the components of a perfect life : the big Georgian house in Norfolk and Two Crispy Ducks, a chic Chinese restaurant in London which she runs with her husband Michael. Their five children are all at Havershams, a prestigious public school and they have a busy social life.

Michael however,is too busy entertaining their dubious new investor, Ping to return home and Juliet is left to struggle with her three unruly sons and two defiant daughters alone.Juliet has always accepted her controlling husbands version of their marriage.Over time she immersed herself in domesticity and let Michael do what he did best. Dictate and dominate. However after years of having to look the part and pretending that life lived on someone elses terms is what she wanted, the veneer of contentment is wearing thin.Suddenly Juliets sister Tamsin announces that her sixteen year old son must come and stay in Norfolk, as he has been expelled from yet another school in New York.

He arrives, bringing his skunk smoking fug with him, but to the childrens horror, enrolls in Hilstead High, the local comprehensive, rather than their posh school. How could he possibly go to a state school? Michael decides to make a fleeting appearance at the family home but brings devastation with him.He announces, in a fairly brutal fashion, that their lovely house is to go on the market and that the children must leave Havershams. Immediately. Shocked and upset, Juliet tries to make sense of it all. Why are they in such financial trouble?

With the underpinning of her world shaken, it is beginning to dawn on her that her marriage is untenable.Hung over from a riotous night out with her best friend Ava, Juliet drags herself downstairs to discover the handsome man from the pub on her doorstep. Why is Kit at her house? She invites him in to find out. Pings son Joe, who runs the local chippie, has made firm friends with Zac and Allegra, Juliets sixteen year old daughter, but he is as creepy as his father.

He doubtlessly has ulterior motives and it looks like rather an unholy alliance.A new house must be found and the news must be broken to the children that they are to join Zac at Hilstead. Kit is supporting Juliet through all these changes, but she wonders why anyone would want to get entangled in her domestic chaos.

When it becomes evident that Michael has forged her signature on some important documents relating to Two Crispy Ducks, she shakes herself out of her state of inertia and takes action.Intent on paying a surprise visit to the restaurant, Juliet decides to travel up to London. Infuriated by Michaels relentless arrogance, she announces that she wants a divorce. Meanwhile, back home, everything is spiralling out of control. It is the end of the summer, and to Juliets relief, Tamsin is due to arrive in Norfolk imminently.Preparations are underway for a big rave at Holkham beach and everyone decides to set up camp.

With Ava and Kits help, the party gets organized, but just as Juliet is about to leave the house, she realizes the extent of Michaels treachery. She joins the others, reeling from shock. The friendship with Joe unravels as the evening gets underway and Allegra goes missing. Could she really have been kidnapped? Panicking, Juliet and Kit search frantically in the darkness and finally she is found. The police arrive and the whole story emerges - Zac spills the beans. The Autumn begins with the children enrolled at Hilstead High School and living in an ancient house that they have nicknamed Swansong.

But it is not Juliets swansong at all. It is, in fact, a new beginning. Michaels ludicrous new circumstances complete the cycle of change for the whole family.
