About The Woodman, Southgate
We’re opening on Tuesday 3rd February 2026!

Our Story
A long-loved landmark, The Woodman is a cornerstone of the community.
The building itself can be traced back almost 300 years, originally a cottage which made history in 1868 when the owner, Henry Wale, a retired police officer, decided to obtain a liquor license so that he could sell beer from his front room and opened it as The Woodman.
The pub gained notoriety for reputedly having the smallest bar in the country.
Our Pub
As soon as you step through the doors of The Woodman, our rich and cosy interiors bring the pub’s traditional charm to the forefront.
Expect cosy corners awash with elegant details and luxurious patterns and textures. We take comfort seriously, something guests know from every visit.
Step outside to our rear patio to discover our newly landscaped space, complete with unique comforting corners, fixed seating and twinkling festoon lighting, ideal for al fresco catch-ups or weekend celebrations.
Whether you’ve been visiting for years or are discovering us for the first time, a warm Southgate welcome awaits!
The Woodman Experience
Our dedicated Heartwood Inns design team has worked hard to make The Woodman feel like a home from home. Whether you fancy a relaxed lunch or a more formal dinner, the pub has a space for everyone. From intricately poised nooks to open and airy dining.
We take pride in our reputation for serving high-quality, seasonal food alongside meticulously crafted pints, a thoughtfully curated wine selection, and an enticing array of cocktails.
Feel free to bring along your furry friend too… just let us know so we can reserve a table in our dog-friendly area. Rest assured, water and treats are on the house for our beloved canine companions. We can’t wait to welcome you and your four-legged friend to The Woodman and Southgate soon!
